Flash floods triggered by intense rainfall have claimed the lives of three individuals in northern West Virginia, according to local authorities. Emergency services continued search and rescue operations on Sunday as several people remained unaccounted for. The flooding, which occurred Saturday night, caused widespread damage to infrastructure across affected areas including Wheeling and surrounding communities in Ohio County.

The National Weather Service reported that between 2.5 and 4 inches of rain fell in less than 30 minutes, leading to a rapid surge in water levels that local drainage systems and waterways were unable to contain. The resulting flash floods swept through streets, inundated vehicles, and caused significant disruptions to transportation and utility services. Local emergency management officials confirmed that crews were actively assessing damage to roads, bridges, and natural gas lines.

Public safety personnel indicated that infrastructure inspections would continue into the week to ensure community safety and restore critical services. Some neighborhoods were left without electricity or access due to washed-out roadways. West Virginia Governor Jim Justice expressed condolences to the families of the victims and pledged full state support for recovery efforts. He also stated that damage assessments were ongoing and that his administration was coordinating with local officials to expedite disaster response and repairs. National Guard units were reportedly placed on standby to assist if conditions worsened or additional flooding occurred.

Residents in the flood-hit areas described scenes of devastation, with water levels rising rapidly and catching many by surprise. Local authorities issued multiple warnings on social media during the storm, urging people to seek higher ground and avoid travel. Despite these efforts, the speed of the flooding left limited time for evacuation in certain areas. Meteorologists warned that further rainfall could pose additional risks in the coming days, although forecasts indicate a potential reduction in storm activity by midweek.

Flood watches remain in effect for several counties in northern West Virginia, and residents have been advised to remain alert and follow official guidance. The deadly flooding marks one of the most severe weather incidents in the region this year, highlighting ongoing concerns about infrastructure vulnerability and emergency preparedness in rural and mountainous areas. Recovery operations are expected to continue as teams work to locate the missing and restore essential services to the affected communities. – By MENA Newswire News Desk.
