A major step towards launching a booster campaign to combat the newest members of the omicron family was taken by Pfizer on Monday when they asked US regulators to approve their combination COVID-19 vaccine. The Food and Drug Administration has ordered vaccine makers to modify their shots in order to counter BA.4 and BA.5, which are more effective than ever at suppressing immunity from earlier vaccinations or infections.

Pfizer seeks approval for updated COVID vaccine boosterBoosters could be available within weeks if the FDA quickly approves the combo shots produced by Pfizer and its partner BioNTech. The U.S. has a contract to buy 105 million of the updated Pfizer doses when health authorities approve them, and the company said the doses are ready for shipment. Other vaccine makers are lagging behind, with Moderna still to file a similar application.

Apple iPhone Duo debuts with dual screens and A20 Pro

Apple has unveiled the iPhone Duo, its first foldable iPhone, with sales set to begin October 23. The new model opens to a 7.6-inch inner screen and carries a 5.4-inch outer display. Apple says the larger panel offers the biggest screen yet on an iPhone. U.S. prices start at $1,999 for 256GB of storage. Preorders begin October 16 across more than 70 countries and regions. The iPhone Duo uses a book-style design with a precision hinge built from more than 100 components. Apple uses grade 5 titanium for the enclosure and Ceramic Shield materials on the exterior surfaces. The company gives the handset an IP68 rating for splash, water and dust resistance. Its inner display includes a nano-texture finish designed to reduce glare and reflections. Both displays support ProMotion, Always On features and peak outdoor brightness of 3,000 nits.
